Seestar S50 Equatorial Mount: Addendum
In this video, we describe three small improvements to our equatorial mount (ruclips.net/video/9Pgy4dHBgA4/видео.html) for the Seestar S50. All three save time and aggravation in using the mount, and all three simply involve locking existing screws into place. In a separate video (ruclips.net/video/ObM6bGUChFE/видео.html), we show how to polar align the Seestar and how to orient it to the equatorial view of the sky so you can use the Seestar app to find and track objects automatically.

Coriolis Carousel: Safety
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.10 месяцев назад
This video discusses safety considerations in using the Utah State University Coriolis Carousel, which was designed and built by Boyd Edwards, John Edwards, and Reynold Edwards for a Science Unwrapped lecture on January 19, 2024 sponsored by the USU College of Science. The carousel is robust, collapsible, and portable, and can be used on any smooth, flat surface without damage to the surface. B...
Coriolis Carousel: Demo
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.10 месяцев назад
This video shows how the Coriolis force can be seen and felt on a rotating platform, called the Utah State University Coriolis Carousel. As seen by riders on this carousel, balls that are passed between them and dumbbells that they thrust forward are deflected sideways. Discussed are: (a) applications for motion on the earth's surface, (b) how this force arises when transforming Newton's second...

Kepler's Laws (8.10)
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.4 года назад
In this video, I show that Isaac Newton's three laws, when coupled with his universal law of gravitation, give Kepler's three laws, a feat that Newton accomplished in 1687 in his Principia. I also show that the periods and semimajor axes of planetary and asteroid orbits obey Kepler's third law to high precision. The result is one of the most profound and historically significant results in phys...

Hey thank you so much! I don’t know what exactly I’m looking for so if someone could help me with search terms? I have chronic pain, no core strength, and I believe things are shifting that contribute to me having less balance. I love to bounce, squat, dance, swing around, anything like that. I have even more fun experimenting with the fluidity of my body when I’m drunk and am not held back by my pain :P I would be more flexible if pain didn’t hold me back too :) I just want to find more activities that I could do that have the same feeling

Great lecture series, thank you!! I had some initial confusion which resolved itself - may be worth sharing with fellow learners. I was thinking, even if the train moves at a constant velocity (hence in an inertial reference frame) and the traveler observes a free falling object - detached from the body of the train - in front, then it will appear to be coming towards him. On further thought, the distinction is the following. In the above description, the mass is initially kept attached to the body of the train till being dropped. So, in the constant velocity scenario the mass has already acquired the velocity of the train, so the traveler inside will observe it to be falling straight down upon being dropped. However, in the acceleration scenario (non-inertial reference S), he will still observe the mass to be rushing towards him upon being dropped.

One problem I am struggling to wrap my head around, is why a 60W bulb glows brighter than a 100W when wired in series, specifically. Our prof made us do this experiment, but the explanation is still unclear to me. Resistance is greater across the 60W....but why would that make it burn *brighter* ?

Does this tube emit X-rays or other high velocity particles that penetrate a human's carcass and sterilize him ? In high school (1978) I found something similar in a science closet. All it needed was power. Went home and asked my Dad about it. He grabbed the phone and started making some demands to the admin folks and professors to get that think away from stupid students. Many years later, we never did have any kids. Related? Don't know. don't care. Best wishes to all that avoided the Clot Shot. -- 5.22.24

I don't like when teachers don't explain why the pressure is lower at that restriction point. The reason, why it's lower is because of the law of conservation of energy. The flowrate must remain the same, like he stated, and because of this, the velocity must increase to push the same amount of volume of fluid over time. But the increase of velocity has to come from somewhere, it cant just be created. This is the reason for the lower pressure. The pressure in this scenario is potential energy, and the velocity is kinetic energy. In order for velocity (kinetic energy) to increase pressure(potential energy) has to decrease. The potential energy (Pressure) turns into kinetic energy (velocity). Think of a full balloon, when it's full, it has lots of potential energy, and as you let air out, its losing that potential energy and turning it into kinetic energy. Hope this helps someone, I know it helped me finally understand this principle.

Maximizing amplitude as a function of natural frequency w0 with driving frequency w held constant does indeed give w0=w. However, maximizing amplitude as a function of driving frequency w gives a value of w that is smaller than the natural frequency w0. This is difficult to see without actually doing the derivative, and setting it equal to zero.

I need to say this with a caveat because I could not do this experiment and film at the same time. Having said this, I think that I get the same results with an empty water tank turned upside down. That would mean air to air refraction. Could you confirm or infirm that? Thank you.
